Iran: Why This Time Actually IS Different

Release Date: March 14 & 15, 2026

Duration: 47:55

Host: Mark Anderson

Guests: US Navy Captain Brent Sadler (Ret.) and Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

About This Episode

Show 16-11 breaks down the evolving Iran crisis, challenging fears of another Iraq or Afghanistan “forever war” by exploring a new U.S. military strategy focused on high-tech operations over nation-building. Featuring retired Navy Captain Brent Sadler, the episode analyzes the Middle East strategic landscape, the role of the Iranian people in potential regime change, and the broader geopolitical impact on U.S.-China competition. It also tackles the critical “day after” scenario—examining power vacuums, regional stability, and how to avoid repeating past intervention mistakes.

Show Notes

  • 00:00 – Host opener, and Captain Sadler on why these strikes in Iran differ from previous military actions. Why those previous “Iran deals” never worked.
  • 09:45 – The potential coming intensity — and what does Iran have left in their arsenal? Iran’s proxies. What do they have left and are they willing to go it alone? Does Iran have genuinely solid allies?
  • 17:45 – China. You get what you pay for. Once again, like Venezuela, China’s much-marketed air-defense shield came up empty. The purge happening in Beijing. Related? Will the Iranian people who want freedom be able to mount a genuine overthrow? Are they truly willing to fight or die for it — coming from 47+ years of abuse…?
  • 25:19 – Wait, something is going on Venezuela? The ongoing struggle they face to take back their country.
  • 34:03 – The bigger strategic picture in Iran. Don’t let Iran pull us away from China and how does success in Iran deter Beijing? Will it? And why America took its eye off China for over 20 years.
  • 40:10 – What too many people are missing and how this Iran war could be a massive game changer for the entire Middle East.

Transcript

In case you hadn’t noticed fixing the world is difficult and rather complicated. When you look at Iran and why we went in there it seems to me that if you can stop an abuser you should.

Except the problem sometimes is that the abused don’t want to be helped. They have to want to stop it.

For somebody to be free from an abuser, the desire for that freedom has to come from them. They have to want it. And it gets really complicated when you’re trying to change somebody else’s society and culture. The desire for freedom has to come from the people living in that society.

But just because they want it, doesn’t mean they could do it. Which is why the first thing that abusive governments do is to make sure that people who do want freedom don’t have the means to do it. They take away guns. They take away freedoms—especially freedom of speech.

And that’s very worrisome when you look at what’s happening in most of Europe right now. There is a genuine effort to silence people who dare to question the government. And it’s especially troubling because so many of America’s foundational rights and concepts of those rights originated in England. America would not exist with the freedoms it enshrined, had England not led the way.

Now England is jailing people for things they put on Facebook. Dare to speak out and your government will jail you. Not an armed rebellion. Not actual terrorist attacks. Your opinion. Your opinion can land you in jail. And if you’re not allowed to have an opinion and not allowed to express that opinion, then you really don’t have any freedom at all.

But imagine living in a place like Iran where it’s even worse. Your opinions—speak against the prophet or Allah or refuse the dress code — can and has gotten people killed. And if you’re a woman? It’s far worse than just being killed.

But what is happening right now in Iran can have generational consequences. If it’s done correctly. No endless wars. No imposition of our culture on theirs. That would be just as abusive in its own way. But right now, they have the desire for freedom and the best way to help them pursue that is to get the abuser out of the house. Be there to help if the Iranians want it and do what you can to make sure another abuser doesn’t walk right in the door.

But it’s not going to be easy. It will be difficult. And it will get complicated. But in the end, freedom is worth fighting and dying for.

But there’s also something else here at play that not enough people are talking about that could prove to be the real game changer for the whole of the Middle East.

And we will talk about that with our guest later in the show. But for now I’d like to welcome Brent Sadler, he’s a retired U.S. Navy captain and currently serves as a senior research fellow for naval warfare and advanced technology at the Heritage Foundation —I didn’t even know they had such a thing. He specializes in maritime security and the technologies shaping future naval forces.

Captain and it’s great to talk to you today!

More About this Episode

Now that Iran’s abusive regime is being removed s lot of people are rightfully worried that America has stepped into another Iraq- or Afghanistan-style international quagmire. But forget those “forever war” scripts of the last 20 years. We’re looking at a totally new playbook in the Middle East that skips the nation-building and focuses on a high-stakes, high-tech surge.

This week, we’ll be breaking down the current military chess board and what the next steps look like operationally—including why the old quagmire fears might actually be off the mark this time.

To do this we welcome first time guest Retired Captain, Brent Sadler, who had a 26-year Navy career with numerous operational tours, including on nuclear powered submarines, personal staffs of senior Defense Department leaders, and as a military diplomat in East Asia. As a Senior Research Fellow, Brent’s focus is on maritime security and the technologies shaping our future maritime forces, especially the Navy.

We take a look at the real wildcard. The Iranian people. We discuss seeing signs of an organic shift that hasn’t been possible until now, and we’ll dive into whether regime change is a pipe dream or a pending reality. This isn’t just about regional borders anymore; it’s a massive strategic pivot that’s going to ripple all the way to our competition with China.

And there’s a wild card here that no one seems to be talking about. One that could dramatically change the dynamics of the entire Middle East.

Finally, we’re tackling the “Day After” scenario. If the regime actually buckles, who fills the power vacuum—and how do we ensure we don’t get stuck holding the bag? It’s a realistic, no-nonsense look at the risks, the rewards, and the lessons we (hopefully) finally learned.

This Week – Israel-Hamas War

On Saturday, October 7th, a Jewish Sabbath after Sukkot (better known as the Feast of Tabernacles in the West), Hamas broke through barriers around the Gaza Strip and invaded Israel. They invaded from multiple points, fired some 5,000 rockets into Israel, and attacked by land and air and even by sea.

The operation, which Hamas dubbed, “al Aqsa Flood,” had apparently been in planning for over a year. A year during which Hamas had been assuring Israel that it wanted peace and normal relations. That it no longer wanted to fight.

Making the mistake of trusting Hamas, Israel was caught off guard. Security watch posts were overwhelmed in the early morning hours. Hamas attacked. By the end of the day, some 1,500 Israelis were dead, including women, babies and infants, and elderly. And another 100–200 Israelis had been kidnapped.

Israel responded by formally declaring war on Hamas.

Was it an intelligence failure? Did Hamas simply deceive a trusting neighbor into complacency? And happened to Israel’s Iron Dome? Did it fail? Did Hamas find out the secret to defeating it? Or did Iran give them technology to help defeat it?

Scott McEwen: Israel-Hamas War Analysis

Israel-Hamas War. Golda Meir Quote: "You cannot negotiate peace with someone who has come to kill you."We welcome back Scott McEwen to talk in depth about the Israel-Hamas war. We had scheduled Scott weeks ago to talk about other issues but after the Hamas terrorist sneak attack and Israel declared war, we scrapped that discussion to spend the full hour on Israel’s war with Hamas.

Scott McEwen is the co-author of the New York Times bestselling, American Sniper, and has his own series of military novels and other non-fiction books about the military and combat operations. (See Scott’s full list of books.) And he has a number of military insiders and contacts, including in special ops, on whom he relies to write his books so accurately.

We talk to Scott about what happened but also how and why it happened. We talk about the $6 billion that the Biden administration handed over to Iran — on the 9/11 anniversary no less. Don’t tell me that didn’t have symbolism for our enemies. America is weak and bowed the knee to Islam.

Infuriating! After Hamas’s attack and a bunch of pro-Hamas rallies break out across Europe — now Henry Kissinger says Europe let in too many foreigners? Now he says it? Kissinger and his globalist goons were the ones pushing the mass immigration.

But we also wanted his military insights into what comes next in the Israel-Hamas War. A Gaza invasion. Will the larger terrorist organization, Hezbollah, join in and attack Israel from the north? What about Syria and Lebanon?

We also address some of the conspiracy theories that are already surfacing. But what does all of this look like in the long-term? Is the two-state “solution” now officially off the table? And how does Israel have normal relations with its neighbors going forward?

And it’s more than Hamas crossing into Israel. What about the incursion on our own Southern border? Could we be seeing terrorist attacks here at home?

Air Dates: May 12 & 13, 2018 | Former Cultural Jihadist, Kamal Saleem

This Week: Monday, May 14th, is the 70th anniversary of Israel’s Independence. Also on Monday, under President Trump’s directive, the US is opening their embassy in Israel. But it’s happening when so much else is swirling all around them. Not all of it bad—in fact some of it is downright miraculous.

With the mainstream media pundits predicting nothing but doom and gloom no matter what Trump does, we thought we’d turn to someone who actually understands the conflict. Someone who knows the Arabic and Islamic culture of anti-Israel. Because he lived it. And was willing to die for it.

Insights on Israel from an Expert (Former) Hater

We go to a real expert, not a pundit. A person who was born in Beirut, trained by the Muslim Brotherhood and PLO, and later commissioned by a Saudi Prince to come to America to wage a cultural jihad, and who reads many of the native languages of the Middle East. We turn to Kamal Saleem.

Born in the very land where hatred of everything American and Jewish was taught, Kamal’s later transformation to Christianity only helps us untangle the Islamic religious/political response but the cultural and emotional response surrounding Israel.

Israel’s Independence at 70 Years

This week, Kamal talks about why Israel’s founding took his family by complete surprise, not to mention the surrounding countries as well. Surprisingly, it wasn’t political.

We examine Israel’s formation, its survival through 10 wars, not to mention countless skirmishes, and the current changing relationships with their Middle East neighbors.  Neighbors such as Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and the most dangerous one of all— Iran.

Israel’s Neighbors

We discuss: how Syria is slowly regaining ground and chasing out ISIS; that Saudi Arabia, is actually making peaceful overtures toward Israel; and how Iran is pulling the strings of a lot of countries. Listen to find the importance of Saudi Arabia’s changing face, the real reasons why they are bombing Yemen, and why they are accepting Israel.

But do they really mean it. If you’ve heard Kamal before, you know about the Muslim doctrine of taqiyya and lying to one’s enemies. Should Israel be trusting? And what are the tell-tale signs of lying or trust for the Saudis?

That Iran Deal: Trump Right or Wrong and Why Now?

If you wondered why Trump (who said all along he wanted to withdraw from the Iran Deal), waited until now to do it, you’ll hear why he did and why waiting played right into his hand. It turns out there was a very goo reason why Trump waited until now instead of when he first had the chance months ago.

And, as usual, the pundits were wrong. They all said it would backfire. Check out this tweet from an actual Iranian, not some CNN pundit: “As an Iranian, I would like to say: Dear President @realDonaldTrump, Iranians are very grateful for your decision to #CancelIranDeal. ”

Lots more on this week’s I Spy Radio Show!

Trump’s Jerusalem — The Key to Peace in the Middle East?

Show Summary: The mainstream media was too busy spewing anti-Trump propaganda to notice how “Trump’s Jerusalem” may have profoundly positive and long-term results. We talk with a former jihadist to learn how Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, combined with some unreported events in the Middle East, may open the door in real peace in Israel. Perhaps even the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple.

A former jihadist reveals why “Trump’s Jerusalem” combined with some unreported developments in the Middle East will open the door in real peace in Israel.

This week, President Trump decided to put a foot down on death-by-committee and officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. After years of promises from past presidents, President Trump directed the State Department to begin the process of moving the United States embassy to Jerusalem. The result from countries such as Turkey was outrage. Fires of anger started raging as Muslims responded to a long time promise of the mid 1990’s.

Not surprisingly, the anti-Trump media also tried to ignite their own firestorm. Except they are completely missing why this is such a historic moment and the key pieces of the puzzle that are suddenly now in play. Even the Trump-friendly media like Fox News and Breitbart are missing these key puzzle pieces. But don’t worry; we have the answers.

Trump’s Jerusalem: A New Era of Peace in Israel?

We pull in our expert on Middle East issues: former Jihadist, Kamal Saleem, who was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to give us insights into the reasons why Muslims are exploding over President Trump’s decision—but also why there is real reason to believe peace may come to Israel as a result of these puzzle pieces that the media is completely missing.  Because Kamal is fluent in Arabic and Hebrew, he is able to give us information you won’t hear in the main stream media. So, tune to find out why this decision to move the embassy is one of the most historic decisions of modern time.

Don’t miss what the rest of the media is missing!

Are the political far Left and Islam kindred spirits? Are American Sniper and Fifty Shades of Grey continuing evidence of America’s cultural divide or just the way it’s always been? And is Fifty Shades a dire indication of the future direction of Hollywood?

This week we talk with James Hirsen of Headline Hollywood, who also has a degree in media psychology to get his perceptions on two recent big box office films on completely different ends of the spectrum: American Sniper and Fifty Shades of Grey. One demonstrates love of county and fighting evil while the other showcases sex and degrading actions towards women. Even some Hollywood insiders were shocked about Fifty Shades’ mainstream release. We’ll talk about the cultural divide happening now in America and whether this is evidence of that divide — and whether it’s indicative of things to come.

Next, we talk to Dr. Andrew Bostom about Islam, the political far left, and the GOP 47 letter to Iran and Netanyahu’s speech. Most I Spy listeners are familiar with the Islamic ideology of taqiya, which makes it permissible to lie to non-believers. But we’ll also talk about the third pillar of Iran’s doctrine of hate, najis. Tune in to hear more about it and how najis is reminiscent of the dehumanizing hatred you sometimes hear from the political far left. Are Islam and the far left kindred spirits? And don’t miss our discussion of the Assembly of Islamic Jurists, which is already operating right here in the US. The Far Left: America’s cultural equivalent of suicide bombers?
