16-17 Iron Curtain Deja Vu Part 2: Echoes of Communism

On Show 16-17, we continue our discussion with Michael Astalis, who escaped Romania’s oppressive communism and came to America, where he became a successful businessman and property developer in Southern California. (If you missed Part 1, you really missed a fascinating story. Head to Part 1, Show 16-15.) Communist Romania had no property rights and after losing all of his income properties in the Los Angeles fires, Michael learned firsthand how California now treats property rights in the same abusive way. But it’s far more than just that.

About This Episode

In Part 2 of Iron Curtain Déjà vu, after growing up in Romania’s oppressive Communist regime and escaping to America at age 21, Michael Astalis is seeing far too many uncomfortable similarities from his former country. We explore a haunting parallel between the regime Michael Astalis left and the bureaucracy he faces today. We start by revisiting the harrowing day he was forced out of university—a manufactured spectacle where thousands of students and professors were gathered specifically to shame him. It was a chilling display of how communism demands absolute conformity, turning a person’s own community against them simply for the “crime” of wanting to be free.

Michael dives deep into the mechanism of that control and how it compares to the crises encountered in modern California. Following devastating wildfires that claimed lives and destroyed homes, a familiar pattern emerged. From empty hydrants and environmental mismanagement to government officials who blame climate change while ignoring their own land-use failures—the echoes of a state that refuses to accept responsibility are unmistakable.

In a nation built on property rights, it was an extraordinary overreach when he attempted to clean his own property at his own expense, only to have police threaten his crew because they weren’t “city-approved.” After witnessing the machinery of both Communist Romania and modern California, does he still believe in the promise of America? Join us for this powerful conclusion.
